This week I finished a commissioned piece that I have been working on for the last few weeks. I feel both melancholy and happy to reach the end. Just as I do in every painting, I lose myself within the work, sometimes loving and sometimes fighting the process. But always at the end, I can see every step in each brush stroke and the feeling is one of bliss. Not long ago, on a trip to the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, I was as close as humanly possible to Van Gogh's Irises when just for a second I could visualize his process. When you can see the texture of a brush stroke on canvas, it is as close as you can get to a great artist.
