Lazy Saturday Morning

With only a few moments to spare this morning, I wanted to post a video that I just can't get enough of lately. God Only Knows is a classic by the Beach Boys but it's not the song that keeps grabbing me back.  It's the music video by the BBC that knocks me out. From the perspective of visual is. STUNNING.

Via Arte 2014 and a Life Lesson

It was another great Via Arte celebration of the arts this year. Last weekend the annual event took place courtesy of the Bakersfield Museum of Art.  There were lots of wonderful artists converging in one area for the sake of raising money for the museum and sharing our talents with so many visitors to the event. The festival takes place at a local open air marketplace. A wide expanse of parking lot is blocked off and artists are assigned squares to work on. The size of my area was 8 x 8. I arrived at 8:00am Saturday morning. Worked on my piece until 6pm and then back again on Sunday morning for 6 more hours, finishing around 2:30pm. During those hours I had a chance to talk with lots of other artists as well as so many wonderful, admiring spectators. It was a fabulous day in every way.

Many of the people I had a chance to talk with truly felt sad to know that just 24 hours later all of the artwork would be washed off and once again, the parking lot would be nothing more than a parking lot.

The whole experience is a lesson in embracing and letting go, passion for anything needs to be embraced by the heart and soul but nothing tangible is ever permanent...and so until next year...

Back to it on Sunday

I can't resist stopping to talk with art lovers.

Painting Class

Saturday. Today is a painting day.

Being a teacher as well as an artist means that during the school year I find extra time to paint almost impossible. For quite a few years I have taught an after school acrylic painting enrichment class. When I started it years ago I thought, well this is great, it filled up within 12 hours of sending home the notice. Now I  offer at least 3 classes a year with a waiting list and teaching this class is my favorite time of the day. I learn as much from them as they do from me.
Here is what I have learned from my art students:

  •  Their passion for learning something new inspires me.
  •  Their lack of adult imposed boundaries frees them to go with their gut, I give them the "how to" and they run with it to create their own masterpieces.
  • Kids need art. It allows them expression. It heals.
  • Most importantly, when the parents of my students come to me and tell me things like..."my son says you get him, you understand his uniqueness" or "she is not a great student but painting has given her confidence".... That is the payoff for me.  :)

Time to get back to my canvas and paint but before I do, I'm posting a rough sketch of this years Via Arte piece. Seriously rough, but I know it will be stunning when done on pavement in art chalk. If you are in the Bakersfield, California area next weekend, October 10th -12th, this event is worth  your time. All of the artists do some spectacular work.
